Board of Equalization member Fiona Ma presented the inaugural Second District Eco Innovator Award to Parducci Wine Cellars, in recognition of their “groundbreaking and forward-thinking approach to sustainability in wine production.” Parducci Vineyards, which has been in business since the founder immigrated from Italy to Mendocino County in 1932, produces a number of varietals, including pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon at their vineyard in Ukiah.

“I am truly excited to recognize such innovative and pioneering leaders in the field of sustainability,” said Ma. “Parducci Wine Cellars has been a true leader in producing amazing California wines, while implementing some of the most rigorous and socially-responsible production methods possible.”

“They have big boots, but a small footprint, and I am truly grateful for the example they have set—not just in the wine industry, but in every industry in California,” added Ma

From start to finish, Parducci Wine Cellars production incorporates sustainability practices at every level of production. Cover crops are planted to enrich the soil and support biodiversity in the vineyard. Effective habitat cultivation and preservation for birds and other insectivores provides a healthy alternative to pesticide use. Domestic animals, like sheep and pigs, are used to control weeds, while also providing nutrients to the soil without the use of synthetic fertilizers. Plant matter leftover from the vintning process is used to produce compost on-site that can be used to further enrich the soil and vines.

Finally, water used in the wine making process is reclaimed through a special wetlands recovery area, treating it and leaving it as a nutrient-rich source of sustainable water for the vines.

“We at Parducci Wine Cellars are very honored to be recognized by our member on the Board of Equalization, Fiona Ma” said Tim Thornhill, Chief Operating Officer of Parducci Wine Cellars. “We are very proud of our commitment to making quality, enjoyable and delicious wines using the latest practices in sustainability. Our philosophy is simple: good stewardship of land, water and our farming practices leaves the same opportunities for future generations.”

In addition to Parducci Wine Cellar’s sustainable cultivation and harvesting practices, the winery is known as a strong supporter of charitable causes, having hosted a number of events such as “Crush Rush”, a five kilometer run that raised funds for Ukiah Unified School District School Gardens and Nutrition Programs.
